Because I work with technology, I am often asked by friends and family members if I can fix their computer. I don’t mind. I am frequently flattered, but often it requires help that I can’t provide. Setting up my neighbor’s network was beyond my technical skill set. It’s rather like asking the pediatrician next door to perform a cardiac ablation. Not exactly in their skill set. Sure they might be able to study up and get it done, but why not just call a cardiologist?
A friend of mine recently sent me a flier for an amazingly cool program at Scottsdale Community College. For free, you can bring in your computer and they will fix it! Students do the work so they will get hands on experience and you get free computer work. Their summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 12:00 PM to 7:30 PM in room CM448. Did I mention it’s free?

Okay, I won’t call you anymore. You could have just said so. Cheech!

You are so funny! While I think you would get great service at SCC, I would be very sad if you didn’t call me.

Many of my friends beleive I should do it for free. My business is repair and service, and the old adage “Oh i will get you a beer” does not pay the bills. So if I do ten a month that is ten beers then….NOT

Ten beers won’t pay the rent. How do you politely decline and then charge appropriately?
